Third Time's the Charm

One of my most anticipated flying adventures has been a cross-country trip from the Pearland Regional Airport to the Southern Flyer Diner, a fly-in restaurant at the airport in Brenham. After having to cancel our plans twice because of weather, the skies finally cleared, and my instructor, Andy Foster at Little Eagles Flight School and I were good to go.

We took off about 10:30am, on a bright sunny day, with the temperature in the low sixties, into one of the bluest skies I’ve ever seen. They say good things come to those who wait, and we were blessed with a glorious day for flying!

It took nearly an hour to get to Brenham, and I got plenty of practice on the way, maintaining our altitude of about 4,500 feet, and keeping us pointed in the right direction.

Andy took us down to the runway and we taxied over to a parking lot filled with airplanes of various sizes, models and ages. But this area didn’t have parallel lines painted on the asphalt to designate each parking space; instead, you stopped your plane on a painted “T”, with the wings crossing the top of the letter. How cool is that???

We moseyed on into the 1950s-style diner, where the waitresses all wear poodle skirts. The menu features standard malt-shop fare, and I couldn’t resist ordering a big, juicy burger with fries on the side, and a yummy chocolate malt. Life doesn’t get any better!

Here we are at left standing in front of the juke box with one of the waitresses. It’s a fun place to go, whether you fly in or drive in, and the food was delicious.

After taking a tour of some of the planes in the parking lot, we bid good-bye to Brenham and took off again into the clear blue sky, headed for home.

It was an amazing bucket list adventure, with lots of thrills, gorgeous weather, great food and a wonderful friend!

Thank you, Andy, for a joyful day!
