Local Authors Go Upscale

I’ve mentioned before on my Cancer Journey Blog about my two writing friends, Marilyn (Chica) Zapata (shown on the left in the photo) and Dawn Storey (on the right). We met at a creative writing class seven years ago, and have been meeting almost monthly ever since, to edit each other’s work in the hopes of getting published. We’ve accomplished that goal, and then some.

Our meetings are now mostly social, because we’ve developed a close friendship over the years—especially as writers who pour our hearts and souls into our stories. There’s not a whole lot we don’t know about each other by now. Our little group started out meeting at Wendy’s, then progressed to Red River Barbecue, and, as we became more successful (at least in our own minds) we branched out into more upscale locations.

But we blew the top off the restaurant chart with our February meeting when Chica suggested that we meet at Cullen’s Bar and Grill at 11500 Space Center Blvd. in Houston. Not only is this restaurant elegant and beautiful (inside and out as you can see by the photos), the food was amazing and the service superb. Thankfully, we went at lunchtime, when there were specials, because the nighttime menu offerings are quite pricey—but well worth the money.

As you can see in the photo at the top, I ordered the Chef’s Trio: a Chicken BLT Panini, pumpkin spice soup, and a chocolate caramel cupcake. Scrumptious!

The main dining room is surrounded by cozy booths for privacy, so we spent three hours there, eating, visiting, and editing. It was a productive meeting, as we each brought a current project: Dawn is writing a book on journaling, Chica is penning her second collection of humorous short stories, and I am plotting my second murder mystery novel.

It was a fabulous bucket list event that I will never forget—for the food and the atmosphere, but most of all, for the friendship!

Thank you Chica and Dawn for SEVEN WONDERFUL YEARS of inspiration, laughter and fun!!!
